Awakening the Divine Feminine: A Call to Balance and Action

We realize the importance of light when we see darkness.
We realize the importance of our voice when we are silenced.
— Malala Yousafzai

A World Out of Balance.

We face a planet in climate crisis, human rights atrocities, health care crises, gender-based violence, loss of reproductive rights, and a global shift to fascism.

Power structures for the last several centuries, even millennia, have been overwhelmingly male and masculine: the patriarchy.

These masculine dominant powers-that-be have encouraged using up resources without replenishment, encouraging war and domination rather than cooperation, and are soaking in pure, unadulterated greed. The patriarchy has made the wealthy wealthier and ignored the vulnerable.

Patriarchal systems have sought to drown out the feminine voice and accomplishments in favor of the masculine and it has thrown everything out of balance. A massive change must occur to course correct this world.

How Do We Shift the Balance?

I believe that change requires bringing masculine and feminine energies into balance – a large task given the entrenched patriarchy and the systems that continue to support it.

To bring the world back into balance of masculine and feminine, we will need something more than thoughts and prayers. We need more than marches, more than pink hats, more than talk. We need something more than spells, candles, and wishes.

We need to shift the power center, and we can’t do it alone.

What Are We Up Against?

Men in power have used religion and spirituality to reinforce their power structure. It doesn’t take a lot of searching to see that the dominate focus of religion and divinity, both currently and going back through history, has been centered on male deities and male energy. (E.g., Yahweh, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, many Hindu deities.)

Beyond just the organized religions which dominate our belief systems, we also see masculine sigils and symbols used throughout history to draw in masculine specific energy. (E.g., the sun, obelisks, pyramids).

That’s a lot of masculine energy embedded deeply within the world we live in.

We need to match and exceed that energy. We need the Divine Feminine.

How Do We Increase The Power of the Divine Feminine?

We have, at least in the western world, and certainly in the United States, been indoctrinated with the idea that the divine is male and that any “divine” women are either the source of a problem (e.g., Eve) or the source of evil (e.g., Lilith).

This focus on the divine masculine forms caused people to stop believing in a Divine Feminine at all. Such a reduction in the worship or even acknowledgement of Divine Women has reduced the voices and therefore the power of the Divine Feminine.

This analogy helps me understand the impact: When you stop speaking about someone you loved who has passed on, your memories of them fade. Their energy fades. By sharing stories about them, honoring them and their memory, their energy continues on.

To increase the power of the Divine Feminine, we need to remember them, to honor them, to share stories, and to believe in them. By doing this we will reawaken the Divine Feminine – in ourselves, in each other, and in the world. That is the key purpose of this blog.

What Else Do We Need to Do?

Increasing the Divine Feminine Energy may sound simple, but as we look more deeply into the insidiousness of the disparaging of the feminine. We need to:

  • Acknowledge and eradicate the ways they have demonized women, divine and otherwise.

  • Eradicate the ways we demonize each other and ourselves.

Needed: An Open Mind and An Open Heart

As we journey through this process, we will need to address things that may make us uncomfortable, things like internalized misogyny, which is a huge barrier to awakening the Divine Feminine. This will not be all light and love, yoga pants and wine parties. We may have some hard conversations, and you might not always like what you hear.

I ask you to approach this work with an open mind and an open heart. The Divine Feminine needs you. We need you.

If you read or hear something that makes you angry or feel guilty or uncomfortable, stop and ask yourself why? Often those things that make us feel angry or guilty are the very things we need to work on.

It won’t be all difficult conversations though

There will also be a lot of joy and excitement as we learn more about these amazing women, these powerful deities, and we begin to see the Divine Feminine awaken and the global shifts happening.

I am immensely passionate about this, and I am happy to launch The Key & Crossroads as a place of community and learning and of awakening the Divine Feminine.

Her time has come, and won’t it be fun to see her change the world for the better?

Thank you for your time this week – join me next week as we dive into one of my personal favorites: Hekate, Goddess of the Crossroads.

See you next week,
Maeve

PS - Don’t forget to do the Activity below!

Activity

"I raise up my voice—not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard. We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back." - Malala Yousafzai

Important Note before we start with the activity.

  • There are many who will say you have to communicate this way or that way or that “you are doing it wrong.” I am a firm believer that no one gets to tell you how you interact with the Divine. If you follow a specific religion or belief system, feel free to adjust this activity to meet your beliefs. As long as you are connecting with the Divine Feminine, the way in which you do that is within your control.

  • This activity does not need to be elaborate or time-consuming. I believe that regular connection is preferable to an elaborate ritual that is too hard to fit into your schedule.

  • If you already work with a female deity, this will be something you probably do every day.

  • If you don’t work with a specific female deity or maybe aren’t even familiar with female deities and what they represent (we will discuss them in later posts), you can still do this by simply focusing on the Divine Feminine energy in general. I have found that saying “Divine Mother” is a good way to tap into the Divine Feminine but find the words that you feel most comfortable with.

OK, caveats out of the way…

Activation Activity 1: Communicating with the Divine Feminine.

Step 1: Identify a way to honor her - the Divine Mother

Select a way to honor and remember the Divine Feminine in your daily life. Here are a few examples:

  • Create a memorial (statue, building, plaque, bench) or altar

  • Light a candle

  • Put up pictures or mementos in your home

Step 2: Talk to her, and then keep it up regularly

Choose a regular interval you can adhere to (daily is always preferable, but we all acknowledge life happens) and talk to her. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or formal, just talk to her. You can do it while you are walking the dog or fixing breakfast, whatever works for you.

Not sure how to start? Here is one way – feel free to adapt as you wish.

  1. Take a moment and breathe. Close your eyes (unless you are driving or doing something you need your eyes open for!)

  2. Greet the Divine Feminine and begin a conversation with her as you would a cherished and loved Female you honor.

  3. “Divine Mother. I haven’t talked to you in a while, but I wanted to let you know I am thinking about you. Your presence in this world is so needed and I want you to know that you are honored in my heart, my words, and my very being. Please guide me to build connections with you in all your forms. Help guide me, help me keep an open mind. Help me hear your messages to me and find the best ways to honor you. Help me to get to know you better so that I can help reawaken the Divine Feminine energy of this world and restore balance. Thank you for calling to me, thank you for seeing me.”

REMINDER: Keep to your schedule and keep a journal to write down what you feel and experience during your conversations.
